Marriage is an important thing, one of the most powerful blessings from God. It is an allegory of how our intimacy with God was meant to be from the beginning. Marriage is God’s creation, His thought, His plan, His initiative. God confirmed the importance of marriage when He said it is not good that man(Adam) be without a wife, a companion, a help meet for him.
Marriage is God’s creation, His thought, His plan, His initiative.
Now the Lord God said, It is not good (sufficient, satisfactory) that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him. Genesis 2:18 AMPC
Marriage is God’s plan for the continuity of mankind. He could have kept on creating man through time as the need arose, but He chose to allow man partner with Him in the birthing of generations past, present and future. What a privilege!
Anyway, I digress, but I believe you are beginning to understand what I mean when I say marriage is one of the most powerful gifts God gave to man and woman.
God Put The Desire In Us
At some point in life, everyone begins to desire a life partner. This desire does not come at the same time or age for all, but it does rise up at some point in a person’s life. It is God who puts that desire in us, that desire to want to settle down with a husband or wife and raise a family together. That desire to have a companion, someone to share our lives with and help make their own lives better.
Of course some can choose to remain single as a sacrifice, in order to give themselves completely to God. See Matthew 19:12
As important as marriage is, there is something much more important for anyone, and to God. What I am about to share with you will change your mind and help you put your life goals, desires and pursuits, the right perspectives. This single most important thing in your life, something way more important than marriage, guides your desires and simplifies your search for the right person.
What Is More Important Than Marriage?
Your Relationship With God.
And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5 NL
God desires us to Love Him with all that we are and have. He wants you to want Him more than you want to be married.
The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. Psalm 14:2 ESV
God wants you to want Him more than you want to be married.
God expects us to continually desire more of Him, to seek Him, pursue His presence and maintain an ever growing relationship with Him. He wants us to be one with Him, that’s the reason He, through His Holy Sprit lives in those who allow Him. God wants to be the closest, most intimate person in our lives. He wants to be our everything and our sole desire.
We Must Pursue A Healthy Relationship With God
In order to have a healthy, vibrant and flourishing relationship with God, our Father, we must constantly fellowship with Him.
- We must always desire Him more than anything or anyone else.
- We must maintain prayer to and conversations with God
- We must constantly read, study, and think on His word.
- We must delight in His word to obey it.
Our desire for God and His pleasure must supersede and surpass our pursuit for marriage or any other thing or person. God will not compete with anything or anyone over you. You either give Him your heart or something else will take His place.
What I have found, is, that many times the pursuit of marriage and relationships consumes many hearts that they no longer put their relationship with God on the front burner.
I am not referring to you “going through the motions” of going to church, serving in church with all the other activities that go with it. While all of these are important parts of our Kingdom life, if we do not enjoy a close knit relationship with God, it becomes activities without substance, lacking eternal relevance.
We do everything backwards if God is not before and above all that we desire, pursue, and do. Click To TweetSeek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33 NLT
You cannot seek God’s Kingdom apart from Him, it would be a futile exercise and lack any meaning.
You Must Allow God Initiate Your Own Marriage
Since mankind and marriage are both God’s creations, it becomes apparent that in order to be successful in marriage we ought to lean on and into God. This leaning must be motivated by love for Him. Love without conditions, love that keeps us wanting and obeying Him.
The Amplified Version of scripture expands the words in Matthew 6:33 as follows: But seek ( aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness ( His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.
God wants us to want Him like He wants us. He wants us so much that He gave Himself in Jesus Christ so that He can have a relationship with us. What a way to show His desire for us.
You have said, Seek My face [inquire for and require My presence as your vital need]. My heart says to You, Your face (Your presence), Lord, will I seek, inquire for, and require [of necessity and on the authority of Your Word]. Psalm 27:8 AMPC
What God said to David, He is saying to us and the generations to come. He wants us to seek Him as our vital need, as someone we cannot and dare not live without. He is delighted when, like David, we commit to seeking Him in this manner.
Serve God, Not Your Desires or Needs
We must resist the urge to serve our needs in place of our God. Our hearts must pant after God in a manner that nothing causes any conflict in our hearts. We know that if we examine our hearts we will be able to judge if we are seeking God like He wants or we are seeking Him like we please.
Again I reiterate that marriage is God’s gift to us, but we must not seek this gift at the risk of ignoring the One who gives it.
Do not purse your desire for marriage at the risk of loosing your relationship with God.
The beauty of it all is that when we seek God like He desires, He will ensure that all our desires according to His word are met, including the desire to be married. Let’s take a reading of the following scriptures:
Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis 2:18 NLT
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33 NLT
Your spouse, your right spouse can only come from God, it is IN Him, you will find her or him. Click To Tweet
So, it it my recommendation that you remain in earnest pursuit of God and His prescribed way of life. Seek Him as your vital necessity and watch Him give you the wife or husband who is perfect for you.
Your marriage is very important to you and God, but your relationship with God is more important for you and to God.
As you choose to keep your desires for God ahead of your desire for marriage, God will fulfil your desires and lead you to the one He has prepared for you.
